A new device invented by Thomas Alva Edison was used on President Garfield to locate the bullet after he was shot by Charles Guiteau in the Potomac Railroad Station. Had doctors not tried to remove the bullet, which Edison's device had determined was lodged near President Garfield's spine, the President might have recovered from the assassination attempt. President Garfield died of an infection caused by unsterile instruments used in the operating procedures.
